Orchards

The village of Montvillers, located at the foot of the « Côtes de Meuse » (hill), is still under the influence of the Longeau river’s valley : this implies a risk of late frost because of the cold air accumulating in the bottoms of the valley. This is why plums, which bloom later then are less exposed to the risk of frost, dominated in the past. There were also vines with peach trees and meadow-orchards often combining sheep and mirabelle plums.

Currently, fruit production is very diversified, especially since climate change favors fruit trees that require more sunlight. But this also leads to a greater risk of frost damage, because buds, flowers and fruits form earlier each year and are exposed to late chills.
